In the Degree in Design, students can choose their specialization: communication design or industrial design, selection being made through the presentation of a portfolio and an interview.Throughout the course, students are assessed using the work developed as evidence of learning, with no formal tests or exams. Instead, there are portfolio weeks, where students present their work to a jury, receiving feedback. Furthermore, the course invites students to exhibit their work, encourages oral presentations, communication of ideas and offers fundamental skills so that students can orient themselves in the world of design through a learning process in which theoretical study is combined with practical work in a studio environment. At the level of the study plan, the curricular units are supported by technical and theoretical units that, together, help to ensure that students have the ability to use software and other digital/practical tools, as well as to contextualize their work. In addition to teaching activities, there are several study visits, real and collaborative projects and a series of seminars and workshops. Students are also involved in creating their own event, where guest speakers address various aspects of graphic and/or industrial design, around a chosen theme. On the other hand, the course offers opportunities to work with international partners, whether through the Erasmus program, the Porto Design Factory or the Product Development Project, organized by Aalto University in Finland, which ensure students get the most out of their time at ESMAD.
