The MA in Audiovisual Communication has two majors: Photography and Documentary Film or Audiovisual Direction and Production.

Students will develop research, theoretical conceptualization, artistic creation and project practice skills and will become trained professionals with higher qualifications in areas such as: research in photography, documentary film and fiction, production, sound, photography and audiovisual direction.

During their first year, students will work on theoretical questions related to research methodologies and to the practices of photography and cinema (fiction and documentary) in the Artistic Residence. In the second year, students are expected to develop an author project in one of the following areas: photography; documentary film; fiction. An alternative route is available through a professional work placement, in collaboration with a company or institution in the area of study.

By favoring interdisciplinarity and a sound relationship with the community, this masters includes in its program an Artistic Residence, the photography and cinema cycle - Images of the Real Imagined - and varied outside initiatives. The program welcomes national and international faculty members, creatives, technical professionals, filmmakers and photographers. It has cooperation protocols with several universities, and partnerships with major cultural and artistic organizations: Curtas de Vila do Conde, Frontal Eyes of Viana do Castelo, DocLisboa, Institute of Cinema and Audiovisuals, Portuguese Center of Photography, University of Santiago de Compostela, South Wales University, Derby University and CCRE / FAUP Research Centers, i2ADS / FBAUP, Wales eCPR, etc. which are seen as creative and aesthetic tools in information and audiovisual communication — Artistic domain: developing concepts and languages in the art of image, namely in the areas of video, photography, sound and lighting. The study program includes a group of subjects in the areas of photography, film, video, television, visual studies, design and information technology..

Educational requirements Those with a bachelor degree (180 ECTS) or its academic equivalent; Graduates with a foreign higher education degree, awarded upon completion of a 1st study cycle, organised according to the Bologna model by a State that has adhered to this Process; Graduates with a foreign education degree recognised by the Technical-Scientific Council as meeting the learning objectives set for a bachelor degree; Those with an academic, scientific and/or professional curriculum recognised as proof of the candidate?s preparedness for this study cycle; Those with an Honour?s degree (300 ECTS) or its academic equivalent.
